Fillings

Our Halifax dentists use dental fillings to fill the space left by a cavity, crack or fracture. We carefully return your tooth's function and structure, leaving you with a healthy tooth.

What are dental fillings?

If during a dental checkup your dentist discovers a cavity or other damage to your teeth, such as cracks or fractures, they can fix these issues with fillings. Most fillings are made of composite (white) and amalgam (silver) material.

Composite fillings closely match the colour of your existing teeth, making this material a good choice for fillings that may be visible when you speak or smile.

Though they are not as natural-looking as composite, amalgam fillings are a favourite for their durability - they are less likely to break when compared to other materials. They are less expensive and take less time to place than other materials. Your dentist may suggest these for large cavities or back teeth.

Inlays & Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are single rigid restorations that are pre-made before being placed in the mouth to fill a cavity. They are used to repair premolars or molars that are too damaged to support standard fillings, but not so damaged that a crown is needed.

When decay is discovered in fissures or pits of a tooth, inlays are used. Onlays repair decay that stretches to the cusps, and may cover one or more cusps.
